Principal Secretary for the State Department of Medical Service, Ministry of Health, Harry Kimtai on Thursday, May 25, 2023 received a courtesy call from Kenya’s Ambassador to the United States, Ambassador Lazarus Amayo.
The meeting focused on enhancing the bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the field of health, with a particular emphasis on HIV/AIDS, family health, local manufacturing of pharmaceutical products, technology promotion, and commodity security.
Discussions also revolved around strengthening the National Cancer Institute of Kenya and the Kenya National Public Health Institute to bolster research, early disease detection, quality care, and better management outcomes.
During the meeting, Secretary Kimtai provided an update on the progress made in areas such as family and child health and emphasized the goal of achieving zero new HIV cases in Kenya by 2027.
He also highlighted the ongoing reforms in the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) and the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to facilitate the realization of Universal Health Care in the country.
Ambassador Amayo expressed his unwavering support for the health sector and pledged to expedite the Ministry of Health’s requests to the U.S. government concerning the discussed areas of cooperation.
This reaffirmation of support bodes well for the future of the U.S-Kenya health partnership.
