The Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Dr Ivan Meyer, has launched the 2023 Western Cape Prestige Agri-Worker Competition in Hermanus, Overberg District.
The competition, held across 16 regions in the Western Cape, will begin in June 2023 and feature 11 categories, including animal production, social development, and general worker.
The competition aims to celebrate and inspire pride in the agricultural workforce, as well as to encourage learning of new skills.
Speaking at the launch, Minister Meyer highlighted the importance of agri-workers in the Western Cape, noting that they played a crucial role in the region’s economy.
The competition is sponsored by Shoprite, and General Manager of Procurement, Pieter van Zyl, expressed pride in the supermarket’s association with the awards, which has been ongoing since 2012.
The Western Cape Department of Agriculture’s Deputy Director General, Darryl Jacobs, hailed the competition as “the leading social upliftment project of the department”.
The competition has previously had a significant impact on the lives of the participants and their families, improving individual self-worth and knowledge, as well as increasing the profile of agri-workers in their communities. Announcement of winner of the competition will be on the November 4, 2023.
