Kenya’s Environment Climate Change and Forestry Cabinet Secretary, Hon Soipan Tuya on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 held a meeting with the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya (IRCK) team led by Fr. Joseph Mutie to discuss various issues relating to the environment and climate change.
The meeting aimed to establish a framework for collaboration between the two organizations. Additionally, the participants discussed ways to promote tree planting in places of worship and schools owned by religious organizations, enhance climate change resilience, and explore carbon market opportunities.
The meeting was attended by several key figures, including Abdirahman Ismail, Bishop John Warari, Nitin Malde, Mariam Hassan, Anthony Blaize, Salim Vayani, and other members of the IRCK.
During the meeting, Hon Soipan Tuya highlighted the importance of collaboration between religious organizations and the government in promoting sustainable environmental practices. She expressed her appreciation for the IRCK’s efforts in promoting environmental conservation through tree planting and urged the council to continue supporting the government’s initiatives in this area.
Fr. Joseph Mutie echoed Hon Soipan Tuya’s sentiments, noting that religious organizations have a vital role to play in protecting the environment and mitigating the effects of climate change. He emphasized the importance of planting trees in places of worship and schools, stating that it was a practical way to promote environmental conservation and educate the youth on the importance of environmental stewardship.
The participants also discussed the potential of carbon markets as a means of incentivizing sustainable practices and promoting economic development. They agreed to explore this further and identify opportunities for collaboration in this area.
