President of Nigeria, Mohammadu Buhari has asked Government workers in Nigeria to be calm and support him to fix the new national minimum wage.
Mr. Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation on behalf of the President was speaking at the 12th National Delegate Conference of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), with the theme: “Towards a Decade of Activism for the Promotion of Labour Unity, National Rebirth and Development.”
The two-day National Delegate Conference explained how the ruling Government planned to achieve a common working condition for all.
The government wants to create good opportunities which will bring high productivity and equal salary, high security in all sectors of Government institutions and a common protection for all citizens.
Mr. Mustapha stated that: “Government appeals for the continued understanding of workers in attempt to address the pressing issue of minimum wage.
“As a Technical Advisory Committee recently inaugurated by Mr. President to develop and advice government on how to successfully actualize the objective of seamless implementation of the impending wage increase.
“To identify new revenue sources as well as areas of existing expenditure from where some saving could be made and to augment present Federal Government’s revenue framework in order to fund the wage increase.
He added that “lastly, to propose a work plan and modalities for the implementation of salary increase in a way that minimize any inflation impact and ensure that it does not lead to any job losses.’’
The President is hopeful that his government will completely support good conditions for workers which will bring high profit and economic growth for Nigerians.
He highlighted that his government recognizes the NLC is part of Government and promised to do anything possible to take care of them.
“This is evidenced by the numerous programmes and policies that have been initiated by this present administration in promoting the interest and well-being of our workforce,”The President said.
